The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a warning, warning that customers will no longer be able to recharge with their cards starting in 2019 unless they upgrade their pre-paid meters.

Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) were encouraged by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to help customers update their meters.

The Commission noted in a post on its Twitter/X account that the updating process will be free of charge and that customers could contact the power Distribution Companies (Discos) for instructions.

“It may be time for an update if you have a prepaid meter. You might not be able to recharge your meter starting in November 2024. But updating is simple and cost-free.

The statement from NERC indicated that “Discos shall begin issuance of two free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) which will update your meter.”

Additionally, it reassured customers that the process will not have any negative effects on the meters’ units and urged them not to worry.

“Neither will the update alter the units in your meter nor will it cause it to run more quickly than usual. For additional details, get in touch with your disco,” it said.

The NERC further clarified that the update won’t have an impact on meter units or speed up normal operational flow.
