The Association of African Universities (AAU) West Africa Office, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have launched a Framework of Action for Accelerating Academic Excellence (FAAAE) in the Nigerian higher education system.
This was revealed at a seminar co-hosted by the AAU West Africa Office and JAMB, which was attended by Vice-Chancellors, VICBHE Module 7 participants, and other stakeholders in Nigerian higher education.
Professor Emeritus Peter Okebukola, AAU Ambassador for Higher Education for West Africa and former NUC Executive Secretary, who hosted the one-day seminar, emphasized the relevance of advancing academic achievement to national and regional growth.
Okebukola, who is also the President of the Global University Network (GUNi-Africa), urged for sustainable support of higher education while also urging higher education authorities to use resources wisely.
The seminar was addressed digitally by AAU Secretary-General Professor Olusola Oyewole, who was commended for the great gains AAU has made in the last two years.
Professor Is-haq Oloyede, Registrar of JAMB, found various hurdles to academic achievement and offered broad-ranging and sustainable measures for bridging the gaps to improve academic excellence.
Okebukola further mentioned that the event was a follow-up to the Conference of Rectors, Vice-Chancellors, and Presidents of African Universities (COREVIP), which will be held in Windhoek, Namibia from July 4-7, 2023.
Participants applauded the immediate-past Executive Secretary NUC, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, in the revitalisation of university education in Nigeria, which is now actively pursued by his successor in office, Christopher Maiyaki, in the preamble to the Framework of Action, which was adopted by the 256 participants who attended the seminar.
The stakeholders also complimented Professor Is-haq Oloyede’s significant accomplishments in increasing access to quality higher education in Nigeria through the sterling activities of JAMB.
