The Nigerian Army’s 181 Amphibious Battalion has discovered 12 operational illicit refining plants in Delta state’s Ughelli South Local Government Area’s Owahwa Creek.

60 crude oil cooking furnaces, 14 reservoirs, 6 wooden boats carrying stolen crude, and 470 sacks of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) were discovered in the camps, according to a release from Monday.

The Nigerian army claims that the crackdown was carried out in conjunction with members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, who have been actively pursuing those responsible for sabotaging Nigeria’s oil sector in Southern Nigeria.

In a related incident, the same military in Delta State’s Ogbodu Community stopped a vehicle carrying 25 polytene bags with suspected illegally processed AGO.

“In a similar operation, also conducted on September 2, 2023, troops of 3 Battalion, intercepted two wooden boats ladened with stolen crude in Tsekelewu, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta state,” the release stated.

The soldiers also detained two suspects in relation to the crime. Both the suspects and the unlawful goods have been given to Tantita Security Services’ NSCDC personnel for further action.

The Nigerian army pleaded with the populace to inform security authorities of any suspected criminal activity or act of sabotage in order to strengthen current operations to stop economic sabotage in the nation.
