Furera Abubakar, 24, was detained by police in Bauchi for reportedly using insecticide to murder a four-day-old baby in the Ningi Local Council of Bauchi State.
The suspect was detained in Bantu village, Ningi, for the crime of culpable homicide, according to Superintendent of Police (SP), Ahmed Wakil, who confirmed the event yesterday. Wakil is the spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command.
Wakil stated that the four-day-old infant was born on August 15 and was killed by the suspect on August 19, just before the naming ceremony. The event was reported to the Ningi Divisional Police Headquarters on August 29, which revealed this information.
Preliminary inquiry, according to Wakil, showed that the suspect is a co-wife of the victim’s mother who is nursing the victim.
“The suspect went into the co-wife’s room and coated the unhealed baby’s umbilical cord with insecticide liquid (Gramalin).
“The liquid caused the baby’s health to decline and ultimately result in his death. The suspect will be profiled and charged to court in accordance with the findings of the investigation, he said.
